First Aid Level 2 (3 Days) - Course Outline

The level 2 first aid course is focused on providing primary first aid care in the workplace in response to health emergencies, particularly those arising from an occupational risk in the specific workplace. First aid level 2 is a pre-requisite for doing the advanced first aid level 3 course. This training course This meets the requirements of the Department of Employment and Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and incorporates the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of the SAQA-registered Unit Standard 120496. CPR in this course complies with the guidelines released by the American Heart Association, October 2015.

•  Communication at NQF Level 1 or ABET Level 4.
•  Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.
•  In order for the learner to achieve this unit standard the learner must already be competent in: Unit Standard ID 13915, ‘Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of hiv/aids in a workplace, and its effects on a business sub-sector, own organisation and a specific workplace’.

The level 2 first aid training course will enable learners to assess an emergency situation and provide basic life support and basic first aid in order to stabilize patients prior to transfer to the emergency services. Our first aid courses are designed to help learners to work logically, efficiently and effectively when assessing and managing an emergency by using a systematic approach to first aid. Level 2 first aid training is a practical, hand-on first aid course and includes: demonstrating the principles of primary emergency care; assessing and controlling an emergency scene in the workplace; demonstrating emergency life support for adults, children and infants (including performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED) and managing a choking emergency); managing bleeding and shock; doing a secondary assessment of the sick or injured person and providing appropriate emergency care at the scene with reference to the potential risks found in the particular workplace and keeping records of the incident/accident.
First Aid Level 2 Course Contents

•  The principles of emergency care in the workplace.
•  Preparedness for health emergencies in the workplace.
•  Assessing and managing an emergency scene in the workplace.
•  The primary survey.
•  Emergency life support for adults, children and infants, including single and two persons CPR, artificial respiration, using an AED and managing a choking patient.
•  Bleeding and shock; anaphylactic shock.
•  The secondary survey.
•  Management of wounds; soft tissue injuries.
•  Common injuries.
•  Head and spinal injuries.
•  Fractures.
•  Joint injuries and rescue carries.
•  Chest, hand and eye injuries.
•  Pelvic and abdominal injuries.
•  Burns.
•  Environmental illness and injuries.
•  Poisoning, bites and stings.
•  Medical emergencies common in the workplace including: diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, stroke, heart attack.
•  First aid and follow-up treatment.
•  Recording an incident/accident.
